Desktop Computer

Problem

What you can try:

Computer not turning on when you hit the power button
  • Locate the power cable at the back of the computer tower. In most classrooms, it is a thick black cable usually towards the bottom. Confirm that the power cable is plugged into the computer and an outlet.
  • Unplug the power cable and then plug it back in.
  • Try plugging the power cable into a different outlet.
Computer power button is illuminated, but screen is black and monitor power button is not illuminated
  • Look at the back of the monitor for the power cable. Unplug the power cable and plug it back in, making sure that it feels like a secure connection.
  • Check that the power cable is connected to a working outlet.
You sent something to print, but it didn't go through.
  • Check that you set your print job to be black & white and not color.
  • Check that you are printing to the correct printer. The Building A printer is named "Building A Faculty Lounge", and the Building B printer is named "Building B Faculty Lounge." Any other variation on those names indicates a printer that is no longer on our network.
    • Chrome is especially notorious for this because even after a printer has been removed from your computer, it will still show up in the printer list in Chrome. If the selected printer name in Chrome is anything other than the aforementioned names, click on the dropdown in the "Destination" field, and then click "See more" to find the printer with the correct name.
You cannot hear the audio that is playing
  • Confirm that your microphone is not muted. On the bottom right of your screen (to the left of the date and time), look for the audio icon. If it is showing an X in the icon, then your speakers are muted. Click on the audio icon to pull up the basic volume control, and then click on the volume line anywhere to unmute.
  • Check that the computer speakers are plugged into your computer tower. There may be 2 connectors to plug in, so follow the cable leading out of the computer speakers.
  • If your computer speakers have a physical volume control knob, make sure it is turned up.
  • If you have more than one audio output plugged into your computer (e.g. computer speakers and headphones, computer speakers and a projector, etc.), check that the audio is coming out of the source you want. Click on the audio icon on the bottom right of your computer screen, and then look for a ^ symbol on the top right of the audio settings pop-up. If you don't see that symbol, then you only have 1 audio output connected to your computer. If you do see the ^ symbol, click on it to reveal the different options of audio outputs that are connected. Click through the options to see if the audio is playing through one of them.

Projector

Problem

What you can try:

Projector is not turning on
  • Unplug the power cable from the back of the projector and from the outlet and then plug it back in on both sides. Make sure the fit is snug on both sides.
  • Try plugging the power cable into another outlet that you know is working.
Projector is on and says "No signal"
  • Make sure your computer is powered on
  • Unplug the HDMI cable from the back of the projector AND from the back of your computer and then plug it back in. Make sure it feels like a secure connection.
  • Make sure the HDMI cable is plugged into the HDMI port and not any other ports (HDMI cables can fit into DisplayPorts). The fit should be snug.
  • Hit Windows key + P to bring up the projection options. While keeping the Windows key pressed down, keep hitting the P key to toggle through the options to "Duplicate." Release the keys and see if the projector is showing your image now.
Projector turned off in the middle of being used
  • Feel the side and bottom of the projector. If it's very hot, let it rest for a few minutes and then try again.
  • Check the power cable on the projector. It may have been a little loose.
Audio is coming out of the projector instead of the classroom speakers
  • On your computer, click on the audio icon on the bottom right next to the time and date. This will open the basic speaker settings pop-up. Click on the up arrow on the top right of this pop-up to see a list of audio options and then select the one that has the projector name (e.g. BenQ or Epson, etc.).
